What is there to do in Grassington and Wharfedale with the kids?
Answer: LOADS!
Grassington is a small market town set at the heart of Wharfedale in the South Eastern Dales. Think cobbled streets, a picturesque market place and cute cafes all surrounded by stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery. Yup. Grassington is goooooooood and it’s also a bit of a hub in the centre of Wharfedale. making it a super base from which to explore the area!
But what on EARTH is there to do with the kids in Grassington? Well never fear, because I’m about to tell you! You’re going to find out about where you can pony trek, go fishing, ride a bike, explore abandoned ruins and caves, go waterfall hunting and more!
Oh and OF COURSE. I’m going to tell you where the park is!

The Best Walks for Kids in and around Grassington
Grassington is a hub for family friendly walks and we have loads of walks in the Wharfedale area but here are a few of our favourites!
Do you want to find a waterfall? Located a short walk from the centre of Grassington are Linton Falls and our walk will also take you to the stepping stones or in a full circular along the river. Whatever you fancy and whatever your capability, there is an option for you!
Fancy a walk around the ruins of the lead mines found on Grassington Moor? You can head up to these from Grassington or you can start at Hebden just down the road. Check out our Grassington Lead mining trail walk to find out more!
Looking for a woodland walk? Grass Woods are in Grassington and are a Wildlife Trust nature reserve!
Want to walk around a reservoir? Grimwith reservoir is just down the road from Grassington!
If you’re in love with geology and fancy an awesome gorge to explore, why not head to Conistone Dib down the road.
Or if peak bagging is your thing? Then head up the 7th highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, Buckden Pike!
Outdoor Activities for Kids near Grassington
You will NOT be surprised to hear that there is a whole LOAD of outdoorsy activities around Grassington that are great for the kids!
Would you like to go pony trekking? The Kilnsey Trekking and Riding Centre is just down the road from Grassington and offers pony treks for all abilities ranging from beginners upwards. Top Tip: book early as they get busy, particularly in the Summer months.
Are you looking for a kid friendly trail? Then head to Bolton Abbey, where you regularly find either the welly walk (Easter to Halloween) or a seasonal trail through the Strid Woods (Easter, Halloween and Christmas). Looking for a family friendly open farm? Then Hesketh Farm is also located just down the road on the Bolton Abbey Estate. It has animals to pet, outdoor and indoor play areas and the epic tractor ride too (our favourite bit!!)
Fancy going fishing? At Kilnsey Park you can go to use their family pond! Any trout you catch you can take away (there is a charge and it is additional if you’d like them to prepare the fish you’ve caught as well). There is also a small farm there, nature reserve and a family trail up to the Holy Spring (apparently the waters make you eternally youthful…. can confirm…. 100% TRUE ….. disclaimer: not true)
Do you want to go cycling? This is one for the older kids, as the age limit is 14 plus, but if you fancy hiring an e-bike, Grassington E-bike hire is the place to go!
Rainy day stuff to do in Grassington
Come on guys… it’s Yorkshire. The likelihood is, you’ll be dealing with rain at some point! But NEVER FEAR! For we have some IDEAS (see what I did there? Poet and I don’t know it and all that….)
Where does it not rain (much!) in a CAVE! Stump Cross Caverns show cave is just down the road from Grassington, and it a great way to spend a rainy day. BECAUSE….
Fancy a trip to the cinema? Stump Cross Caverns has its own cinema too! You can hire it out for private hire with a selection of films to choose from (minimum prices do apply but don’t discount it, it’s more reasonable than you think to have your own private cinema!)
Billy Bobs Ice Cream Parlour is a little drive from Grassington (20 - 30 mins), but has a family friendly restaurant and indoor play barns (and outdoor play areas) too.
Grassington Folk Museum is located right in the middle of the market square and is a top little stop on a visit to Grassington! (Seasonal opening times apply check out the Folk Museum website for more info!)
Keep your eyes peeled on The Stripey Badger bookshop too for occasional family focussed literary events.
Where’s the play park in Grassington?
The park at Grassington can be found just near the main Yorkshire Dales car park and visitor Centre (where you’ll also find the toilets!)
From there, head out onto the main road out of Grassington (Hebden Road) Cross over the crossing and walk for about 100 yards in the direction of the town centre.
You’ll see the school and next to that a gated track that leads to the playing fields (Acre Lane) the park is there! (What 3 Words: given.crumb.wounds)
You’ll find a great section for toddlers, older kids and there is a small skate park too.

A Day Out in Grassington must do Itinerary
Ok. You only have a day in Grassington, what would we recommend you do?!
Grab a coffee and a cake from the Cake House in Grassington.
Walk to Grass Woods, check out the ancient settlements and the site of a Brigantian hill fort then head back along the beautiful riverside, pausing for Ghaistril’s Strid and then head back into Grassington for Ice Cream at the Hatch.
If you're looking for lunch, then we recommend The Retreat for tasty freshly cooked treats!
Head to the play park (of course!)
If you have a rainy day, we’d definitely recommend Stump Cross Caverns, where you’ll also find their fabulous cafe, serving tasty homemade food.
If you’re looking for a family friendly pub, The Devonshire is pretty famous for being the Drovers Arms in All Creatures Great and Small!
