What can I say about Robert’s Park?

Well, we’ve spent many an hour here picnicking, playing, running manically round the bandstand…….

Built in the late 19th Century by Titus Salt himself (aka Mr Saltaire), this grade II listed urban park is a top place to stop and play, picnic, and wander along the Leed Liverpool Canal.

There’re ducks, a fantastic park area, skate park, paths that are perfect for scooters, and of course pushchairs!

Plus coffee, ice cream and if you’re feeling fancy, a trip on a canal boat!

AND if you’re feeling SUPER fancy, Salts Mill has a gallery, places to find beautifully unique things to buy and it has a top diner and cafe!

Enough to fill a day out?! I THINK SO! Read on for this family friendly pushchair walk.

Robert’s Park Walk Details

Distance: Under 2 miles

Terrain: Easy underfoot, pushchair friendly, surfaced paths.

Parking: There is on street parking available at Roberts Park (some limited to 2 hours) or at Titus Salt School (on weekends, bank holidays and during school holidays) Do not block any access points or properties.

Public Transport: There are bus links to Saltaire and Shipley train station is a 1 mile walk.

Dog Friendly: Yes

Location: Saltaire.

Directions for our Robert’s Park Walk

  1. Beginning at the play and skate park in Robert’s park (because there’s no way you’ll get past it otherwise!) walk out of the park towards the grounds of Robert’s park. Here you have a choice. Turning right, will take you along the promenade next to the bandstand, if you want to explore this, but you will have to double back on yourself if you have the pushchair. The path directly ahead will take you either past the Half Moon Cafe and llama statues, or you can choose to veer left and walk alongside the River Aire. Your choice, but whatever you do (coffee, an explore or feed the ducks), you need to eventually head towards the cricket pavilion.

  2. Behind the cricket pavilion and to the right of the building is a path that leads out of Robert’s Park and alongside the canal. Take this, and walk parallel to the river until you see the bridge. You need to cross the bridge.

  3. On the other side, there is a path immediately to your left, which goes past the football club and a path that leads up straight on to the canal. Take the one up to the canal, and turn left. Follow the canal back into Saltaire. If you want to walk a little further on under the bridge to check out the mill buildings, then you can from here. If you want to head up into Saltaire to explore around Salts Mill, you need to get up onto the bridge crossing the canal and turn right, Salts Mill is on your left. If you want to head back to the park, turn left and head back over the bridge to where you began! Easy right?!

⭐ We hope you enjoy our walks, but please exercise common sense as routes can change with the weather conditions and seasons! The routes have been walked by our own two feet, but you know your own limits. Always take a back-up map, don’t rely on GPS alone, wear appropriate clothing for the weather and take adequate snacks and refreshments with you (although as a parent, I know you already know that bit!)

⭐ Leave no trace! Take nothing away and leave nothing behind, take all rubbish home with you.

What’s cool for kids on this walk?

✨ Ok, ok, by now, if you’ve explored the website, or even if you follow us on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll know that we (well ok, I) like a little geek out on some history, and Saltaire has it in spades! Originally called Saltaire Park, Robert’s Park was renamed Robert’s park after Sir James Roberts who took over the Salt’s Company after Sir Titus Salt’s death. It was given to the community in 1920 and was known as Robert’s Park after that point. Who is Sir Titus Salt?! I hear you call (also….. SUCH a strong name!) Well, he is the chap behind Saltaire, which is a beautiful Victorian Model Village in Shipley, Bradford and is a World Heritage Site. The village was built to serve the large textile mill, Salts Mill, and is really rather beautiful. Salts Mill is now used as an Art Gallery, Cafe and is the home to some fabulous little shops selling beautifully unique things!
