Bolton Abbey, Storiths Crag

This is a great little wander if you want to escape the crowds of the Bolton Abbey Estate for a little while.

It takes you up to the viewpoint on Storiths Crag to give you a peaceful view (so best leave the kids down as the bottom eh?!)

Have you ever visited Bolton Abbey?

A popular spot for visitors! But this walk is a nice alternative to the usual trails around Bolton Abbey, and takes you off the beaten track to escape the crowds for a bit of peace!

This lovely little mini wander, is short but sweet! Parking is £12.50/vehicle at Bolton Abbey Village, so we’d recommend a thorough explore of the ruins or perhaps to take part in one of the seasonal trails at Bolton Abbey, to get your money’s worth, otherwise you will be left wanting!

The walled path from Bolton Abbey to Storiths

Directions to Storiths Crag

  1. Beginning at the Abbey ruins, head down towards the river crossing (the stepping stones or bridge). Once on the other side, take the path that ascends to the upper parts of the woodland (not the welly walk route which enters the lower part of the woods). After approximately 100 yards, there is a sharp hairpin turn to your right. Take this route up to the path signposted ‘Bridleway - Storiths’ (Pictured above)

  2. Follow this walled path all the way to the farm, at which point turn right and head towards the very quiet road, leading into the centre of the village. The road bends left. Follow it until you reach a crossroads.

  3. Storiths Crag is directly ahead of you at this point. Turn right walking underneath the crag, following the base as it bends round to the left. Take the quiet access track to the back of the crag and soon you will see a path heading upwards to the right hand side of the walled area. Walk up the hill to the bench at the top and take in the views (and the peace)

  4. Then head back the way you came!

⭐ We hope you enjoy our walks, but please exercise common sense as routes can change with the weather conditions and seasons! The routes have been walked by our own two feet, but you know your own limits. Always take a back-up map, don’t rely on GPS alone, wear appropriate clothing for the weather and take adequate snacks and refreshments with you (although as a parent, I know you already know that bit!)

⭐ Leave no trace! Take nothing away and leave nothing behind, take all rubbish home with you.

⭐ If you choose to paddle, be aware of bio security. Always wear clean dry water shoes (if worn) to avoid cross contamination of species between watercourses, this is a particular issue in the Yorkshire Dales, to help protect the white clawed crayfish.

⭐ If you decide to paddle, be aware that wild water can be dangerous, and water levels will vary season to season. Always supervise children around water. Check out the safety information on the Royal Life Saving Society website.

What’s cool for kids on this walk?

✨ The Abbey ruins are a great spot to explore, and we thoroughly recommend it! The river here is a brilliant place for a picnic and a paddle, and Bolton Abbey regularly have seasonal trails on, so check out the website to find out more and to make sure you get your money’s worth from the parking charges!

💦 Paddling at the river bank in Bolton Abbey is a staple of our summer! But swimming downstream of the bridge is prohibited due to the dangerous currents of the Wharfe.

🍰 There is a cafe at the Cavendish Pavilion, and also at the Bolton Abbey Village. There is also a Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream van virtually permanently stationed at the Abbey ruins.

🌳 This little mini peak is a super short wander, but if you need some extra activities to keep the walking whinges at bay, why not try one of our walking games?
