Tales of the Dales: Hardraw Force

‘The sound of thunder rolled around the rocky crater surrounding the cascading falls, which themselves swollen by rainwater created a deafening roar. Above the cacophony, furious raised disembodied voices could be heard from the dizzying heights of the rocky cliffs…’

Hardraw Force is claimed to be one of the UK’s highest single drop waterfalls, and is set in beautiful woodland. Far too beautiful to be the setting for a murder…… (come oooon that’s deserving of a collective ooooooh right?!)

The story goes that during a thunderstorm, the raised, angry voices of a group of men can be heard, repeating their crime endlessly at the top of the rocky cliffs which overlook the falls. Reportedly the group of men threw the body of their victim over the edge during a storm, leaving behind (somewhat mysteriously) a fused and melted dagger… when the body was recovered, it was presumed a suicide, and was treated as such.

It was only when further investigations were made, that the true details became apparent. The sounds of that fateful night, continue to echo round Hardraw Falls during stormy nights, perhaps on account of the fact that the poor unfortunate victim was never given a proper burial…..

It’s spooky isn’t it?!

And if you fancy a pint to go with your ghost story, the falls are located in the grounds of the Green Dragon, and the pub itself is in fact haunted by the ghost of a playful little boy who enjoys rolling balls along the bar floor!

So get yourselves to Hardraw Force!
